This was a brilliant book， a lovely heart lifting read。 It was hilarious， moving， relatable。 There was a bit of everything: daring， friendship， secrets， invisibility （obviously）， humour。 The main character Ethel and her friend were both so relatable。 Enjoy！

I don't often read books for young and middle grade readers， but What Not to Do If You Turn Invisible might have gently nudged me in that direction。 This book has twelve year old Ethel as the protagonist and she goes through a series of experiences （including being invisible！） which change her and let her see herself for who she truly is。 I enjoyed the book and definitely rooted for Ethel。 I am sure that young readers will find the book to their taste and enjoy seeing Ethel battle with some of t I don't often read books for young and middle grade readers， but What Not to Do If You Turn Invisible might have gently nudged me in that direction。 This book has twelve year old Ethel as the protagonist and she goes through a series of experiences （including being invisible！） which change her and let her see herself for who she truly is。 I enjoyed the book and definitely rooted for Ethel。 I am sure that young readers will find the book to their taste and enjoy seeing Ethel battle with some of the same or similar image， body， friendship and who-am-i-really issues as themselves。 。。。more

del lettino abbronzante che ha in garage， si ritrova invisibile。 Non se ne accorge immediatamente， ma vi posso assicurare che lo shock di sapere di avere un corpo， ma non vederlo materializzarsi è per lei fortissimo。 Prima cosa da fare parlare con la nonna e dirle il problema， ma niente da fare nonna non ci crede， trovare qualcuno che senza averti davanti creda alle parole ‘sono diventata invisibile’ è dura， per fortuna però qualcuno si presenta a casa sua senza essere stato invitato…Elliot Boyd， il nuovo arrivato a scuola， colui che è emarginato almeno quanto Ethel e che vorrebbe con tutto se stesso poter dire di aver trovato un’amica。 Ethel non è certa sia una buona idea far sapere a Elliot della sua condizione， ma non ha molta scelta visto che la sua cagnolona è sparita e lei deve uscire a cercarla pur essendo invisibile。 E con chi volete che sia Lady？ Ovviamente i gemelli bulli della scuola， che amano particolarmente fraternizzare con Ethel e Elliot e che tramano sempre qualcosa di losco。 Di quei due non ci si può fidare， sono pericolosi， infimi e davvero poco gradevoli。 L’incontro con Ethel travestita da pagliaccio non li lascia indifferenti e così i nostri due protagonisti finiscono con l’attirare su di loro le attenzioni sbagliate dei ragazzini peggiori che ci siano in circolazione。Ma è giunto il momento per Ethel di confessare a Elliot il motivo di questo costume， Elliot resta incredulo di fronte all’invisibilità di Ethel e le fa un mucchio di domande， chi non lo farebbe？ Ethel vorrebbe solo tornare a essere visibile e capire cosa può essere successo。 Insieme si rendono conto che l’invisibilità è solo momentanea e che a scatenarla è stata una combinazione di Decotto “Pelle Liscia” del dottor Chang + lettino abbronzante。 L’acne è un bel problema quando hai dodici anni e i ragazzini sanno essere parecchio crudeli e così le provi davvero tutte per superare questa fase così fastidiosa della tua vita。Essere invisibili a comando può essere parecchio divertente， ma può anche cacciarti in guai seri。 Specie quando non sai tenere la tua linguaccia a freno e arrivi a far star male l’unica persona al mondo che prova a esserti amica。 Ethel ha dodici anni e si vede， mi ha straziato il dolore che prova Elliot， per fortuna però questa frase molto infelice permette a Ethel di capire che si sta comportando esattamente come gli altri fanno con lei e che a tutto questo può porre rimedio dimostrandosi non solo una persona migliore， ma anche una vera amica。 Divertente la serata del talent a scuola in cui Ethel mostra tutto il suo impegno per stare accanto a Elliot， non altrettanto esaltante il risvolto di quella serata。 Che scoprirete solo leggendo。All’inizio della recensione vi ho accennato anche alla voglia di Ethel di scoprire qualcosa in più su se stessa e sul suo passato， mi è piaciuto che l’autore abbia spaziato così tanto e non si sia concentrato unicamente sui problemi comuni di tanti preadolescenti。 Ethel è una ragazzina che， non solo deve avere a che fare ogni giorno con acne， emarginazione e bullismo， ma vorrebbe anche capire che fine abbia fatto suo padre e qualcosa di più di sua madre， perché la nonna non ama parlarne e la tiene totalmente all’oscuro。 Ethel ormai è grande e merita di sapere， quindi è pronta a giocare tutte le sue carte per arrivare alla verità。 Insomma smeraldi se siete alla ricerca di un libro da regalare ai vostri figli o nipoti fermatevi perché lo avete trovato， la scrittura di Ross Welford è semplice e coinvolgente， le dinamiche di grande attualità e la copertina adorabile。 Cose da non fare Okay， so this is not a bad book。 It it well written and I can see how others might love it。 And if you do like the sound of it， definitely give it a try！However， I personally absolutely could not stand it。 I literally had to put the book down and walk away from it， because I could not handle the way the characters were behaving。 They drove me absolutely MAD sometimes！ So inconsiderate， timid， afraid， and whiney - at least to me。 I know that they are supposed to represent real people， but actual Okay， so this is not a bad book。 It it well written and I can see how others might love it。 And if you do like the sound of it， definitely give it a try！However， I personally absolutely could not stand it。 I literally had to put the book down and walk away from it， because I could not handle the way the characters were behaving。 They drove me absolutely MAD sometimes！ So inconsiderate， timid， afraid， and whiney - at least to me。 I know that they are supposed to represent real people， but actual real people who would behave like that would also annoy the heck out of me。 I kept trying to go back to the story - hoping it would improve - but I've given up now。 No point to keep reading something you do not enjoy。 。。。more

L’età dei dodici anni è un traguardo che segna la fine dell’infanzia e introduce nella preadolescenza， aggiungendo tutti gli annessi e connessi che comporta quel periodo di crescita。Ethel sa bene che quello che sta vivendo è un periodo difficile， si è accorta che gli ormoni stanno trasformando il suo corpo e le relazioni con gli altri coetanei sono difficili， il suo problema è che non sa come gestirli e prende decisioni affrettate e non ponderate per bene。 Come comprare una lozione anti acne da L’età dei dodici anni è un traguardo che segna la fine dell’infanzia e introduce nella preadolescenza， aggiungendo tutti gli annessi e connessi che comporta quel periodo di crescita。Ethel sa bene che quello che sta vivendo è un periodo difficile， si è accorta che gli ormoni stanno trasformando il suo corpo e le relazioni con gli altri coetanei sono difficili， il suo problema è che non sa come gestirli e prende decisioni affrettate e non ponderate per bene。 Come comprare una lozione anti acne da un dottore cinese e un lettino solare prossimo dall’essere smaltito。Dopo la morte della madre la piccola cresce con la nonna， che Ethel definisce una persona a modo e dal comportamento eccelso， e viene educata secondo le regole di una volta e con una mentalità chiusa。 La ragazzina è ribelle a suo modo， vorrebbe vivere felice， avere degli amici， non essere derisa per il suo aspetto e non avere il soprannome di faccia da pizza che i bulli fratelli gemelli Jesmond e Jarrow Knight le hanno affibbiato， deridendola davanti a tutta la scuola。Decisamente è temeraria quando assume la lozione anti acne cinese， ma è un gesto di frustrazione che deriva dai precedenti rimedi che non hanno portato miglioramenti alla sua pelle se non peggiorarla ulteriormente e la spavalderia viene sostituita con la paura quando si accorge dell’effetto collaterale che le accade: diventa invisibile。Se all’inizio tutto la spaventa， quando scopre come funziona l’attivazione dell’invisibilità， il coraggio e la determinazione crescono dentro di lei e le fanno stringere un amicizia con Ellion Boydy e l’apprendere che， forse， la nonna le nasconde qualcosa sulla sua famiglia。Il personaggio di Ethel è caratterizzato molto bene perché dimostra la fragilità della fanciullezza che ancora è presente， ma anche la voglia di dimostrare di essere grandi e avere il proprio posto nel mondo。 Il suo trovarsi invisibile la porta ad avere un atteggiamento istintivo verso gli ostacoli che dovrà affrontare e in questo Boydy sarà un valido alleato， oltre che prezioso amico。Accanto a lei ci sono i compagni di scuola e ognuno riporta un esempio di come i caratteri prendono forma e troviamo gli arroganti， le ochette， i nerd e quelli che vengono definiti gli ‘ultimi’。 È una descrizione reale che parallelamente riporta la visione che si ha degli adulti che vengono percepiti come distanti， distratti， e non al passo。La tematica del bullismo e del rispetto verso gli animali sono inseriti in maniera efficace e intelligente: Ethel li riporta con ingenuità ma anche con trasporto trasmettendo al lettore il giusto messaggio e considerazione。Le ambientazioni che mi hanno colpita di più sono quelle scolastiche e il faro。 Nella prima si respira l’aria dei ragazzi e le loro dinamiche， mentre sul mare si percepisce la potenza della natura， il suo fascino e anche， in senso metaforico， una ricerca di un punto fermo， il faro per l’appunto， che indichi a Ethel la strada che la conduca verso suo porto sicuro。La narrazione in prima persona presenta una buona dose di rottura della quarta parete， come se Ethel avesse bisogno dell’approvazione del suo lettore e una sorta di conferma che quello che combina sono cose che capitano， è trascinante， ironica e molto fresca。 Vedere il mondo attraverso gli occhi di Ethel è， non solo come tornare preadolescenti， ma un approccio diretto alla vita che in un secondo sembra terribile mentre l’altro appare piacevole。Il libro si legge con scorrevolezza， la storia lascia una bella sensazione e quello che rimane alla fine è una domanda: si diventa invisibili per davvero， o come sostiene la nonna di Ethel， ci si sente invisibili agli occhi degli altri？ 。。。more
